Last summer (2007), Brian Reilly identified an area where our company could save money. Brian's thought was that we had many telephone lines in our stores that were never used and in some cases, did not even have telephones plugged into them. In the Fall, Brian began researching the project and quickly identified hundreds of lines that we were paying monthly fees on even though we did not use them. Brian methodically went through the validation steps and in January of this year he began the process of having these lines disconnected. As of Thursday May 8th 2008, Brian had validated 1,887 lines with no usage. The annual savings from the lines he has had disconnected to date is $1,030,190.00. This savings is a direct benefit to the bottom line of the stores P&L.

Brian continues to work closely with the LEC's to identify, validate, and disconnect lines that are not being used. In addition, Brian is looking at solutions that Wal-Mart can utilize to monitor and prevent this from happening in the future.
